Incoming Seventh Graders In the spring, high school guidance counselors visit the sixth graders in the Carnegie and Crafton Elementary Schools to discuss the scheduling process and course selections with students. Hard copies of the Program of Studies are distributed at that time. The sixth graders are invited to tour the high school in May. They are transported by bus to the high school and greeted by older students. After a meeting in the auditorium, where they meet the principals and the district superintendent, upperclassmen will then lead the youngsters through the entire building to familiarize them with the lay-out of the school and offer guidance to ease the transition from grade six to seven. In August, shortly before the first day of school, an orientation is held at the high school, which provides the opportunity for students and their parents to visit the school, tour the building again - with schedule in hand - and sit down for a question and answer session. Following the formal orientation, time is given for parents and students to complete a second walk-through of the high school building to better familiarize themselves with classrooms, the auditorium and band wing, and the gymnasium and pool wing (should they so desire). |

Scheduling for classes is intended to be an interactive, interpersonal, problem solving process involving the student, parent/guardian, teachers, counselors and administration. Students are able to explore options, investigate opportunities and be a part of the process of creating their own schedule. Throughout the process, students will need to exercise communication skills and apply decision-making abilities. School resources are available throughout the process to assist each student from beginning to end.
